The original Riverstown House, Co. Cork, Ireland was built in 1602, and it was rebuilt and remodeled in 1730's by the then Bishop of Cork, Dr. Jemmett Browne. It is a magnificent house and reminds one of such houses as Tara, from the film "Gone With The Wind", and those in some of the Jane Austen films, from her novels. One of my daughters said it reminds one of the great house in "Pride and Prejudice."
A river runs through the gardens and was running full that rainy day when we visited in November. A beautiful park with deer grazing comes close to the garden walls also. We were met at the door by the wife of the man who inherited the house from family. We had a wonderful and very interesting tour through the mansion. The Lafrancinis Brothers from Italy, sculptors, adorned the ceiling of the dining room with allegorical figures, and also its walls with classical figures.
The House was the seat of Dr. Jemmett Browne, Bishop of Cork. The Lady of the house told us they did not know how many families had lived previously in the abode.
