Christmas Cactus

This Christmas cactus bloom of July;

Reminds me to always remember

Christmas and its joys of long ago.

 Why did it bloom in July in my yard?

Was it to give me a message of

Christmas, and that Christmas really

Can be everyday in our lives?

Maybe.

The Christmas Cactus are blooming!

I always find it very interesting and beautiful that in our mild climate, my Christmas Cactus(Schlumbergera) plants bloom during the summer. It is important in this climate to be a bit stingy with the plants, as they seem to not want too much water. I fertilize them monthly with a mild liquid fertilizer, keeping them in their reserved place on the covered patio in the shady area on their terrace, only getting a very small amount of sun this time of year. I love the stunning colors and have propagated some new plants from the older existing one. I recently gave one of my Christmas Cactus, Holiday Cactus White, to one of my friends and it was received very happily. It is indeed one of my favorite colors. You can view more of my Christmas Cactus photos from the past here.

I hope you enjoy these Christmas Cactus which were photographed during July, 2007 and beyond. I enjoy them very much. Their vibrant and gracefulness make this one of my most favorite plants in my garden. -BT July 10, 2007 (Oh, and Merry Christmas!! I know it is early, but the Christmas Cactus are blooming!!!!!)

"Always try to grow in your garden some plant or plants out of the ordinary, something your neighbors never attempted. For you can receive no greater flattery than to have a gardener of equal intelligence stand before your plant and ask, "What is that?"~Richardson Wright
